Army helmets from Britain and USA. The helmet with a camoflage cover is an American Mark 1 and the dark green helmet is a British Mark 4 popularly referred to as the 'Turtle Shell'. Both steel helmets have inner strapping, chin strap and buckle.
The first steel helmets were issued in 1916 when it became clear that many soldiers were dying from head injuries. The Mk 1 was introduced in 1942 and came to symbolise the American soldier for the second half of the 20th Century. The British Mk 4 was introduced in 1945 and was used during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
